The links between animal and child maltreatment:

Findings from a study exploring experiences of animals in families

To date, most empirical research examining the co-existence and possible interconnections between child and animal maltreatment has been conducted in North America.

Relatively little UK research has been undertaken to explore and understand these possible 'links' more fully.

In this presentation, Simon will attempt to move forward the debate about child and animal maltreatment in the UK context in two ways.

In the first part, he will offer some key points from a critical literature analysis of the existing international research base into the co-existence of animal and child abuse.

The strength of this research base will be assessed and major research themes delineated. In the second part of the presentation, Simon will present the findings of an exploratory study into patterns of animal ownership and treatment of animals in different groups of UK families.
